Fish Oil and Strength Training
A recent study completed at the Parana Federal University in Brazil looked at strength training in females in their 60s. Researchers discovered that while all were able to gain strength, those who supplemented with fish oil benefitted with greater strength and muscle gains. While fish oil is a recognized and popular supplement for lowering triglycerides and cholesterol, it does have many other benefits, including the improvement of nerve function. therefore, the research team theorizes that fish oil increases the muscles capacity to contract and respond to weight training. Keeping in mind the small sampling of 45 subjects, more research is necessary to confirm these exciting findings.

Fish Oil for Fido
The pluses of taking Omega-3 fatty acids are well documented, with a plethora of benefits for the brain, heart, skin, joints, and eyes. If you're not currently taking Omega-3s you should reevaluate your supplement program. But how about Omega-3s for our furry friends? Why shouldn't they take advantage of the many benefits of Omega-3?

Over a year ago, our two small dogs (a Bichon Frise and a Silky Terrier) started having regular bouts of limping, for no clear reason. A number of trips to the vet revealed no signs of injury though it turns out both suffered from subluxating knee joints. Aside from surgery there was no real options. We started supplementing their diet with a Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplement made especially for dogs. After a few months it was clear this was not helping. The limping would still happen.

On one return trip to the vet we asked if there was a supplement that could alleviate their pain and he suggested fish oil. We started adding a half capsule of fish oil to their dinners every day. I am delighted to state that the fish oil definitely made a huge difference!

At this time, a year later, both dogs have not had a single limping episode! If your dog has similar problems talk with your vet. Fish oil did the trick for our dogs.
